The ferret is the most popular companion in Critters and Companions: small, curious and endlessly charming. This guide covers how to find one, how to tame it and how to look after it once it’s yours.
Where do ferrets spawn?
Ferrets live in grassy and wooded areas. Look through plains, meadows and forest edges, especially in freshly generated chunks. They’re small and blend into tall grass, so slow down, and press F3 + B to show hitboxes if you’re struggling to spot them.
What do you feed a ferret?
Ferrets are tamed with their favourite food, and the taming item can differ between mod releases. The quickest way to check in your version is to hold a candidate food and see whether the ferret shows interest and follows you, or read the details on the official project page. Meat-based foods are the natural first thing to try. Bring a full stack so you don’t run out mid-attempt.
Step-by-step: taming a ferret
- Approach slowly. Hold Shift to sneak so you don’t startle it.
- Hold the taming food in your main hand.
- Right-click the ferret to feed it. Smoke particles mean it’s not convinced yet; keep going.
- Watch for hearts. Heart particles mean it’s tamed and now belongs to you.
- Toggle sit by right-clicking your ferret with an empty hand.

Keeping your ferret safe
- Put a name tag on it so it never despawns and is easy to find.
- Tell it to sit at home before dangerous trips like the Nether.
- Build a small fenced area near your base with a roof and some light to keep hostile mobs away.
- Use a lead to move it across rivers or long distances.
Common mistakes
If nothing happens when you right-click, you’re likely holding the wrong food for your version, or the ferret is already owned by another player on a server. If your ferret vanished, check that the mod is still installed and at the same version; removing or swapping it removes its critters.
